The School of Mechanics and Civil Engineering consists of five departments which list as following:

Department of Engineering Mechanics

Department of Engineering Mechanics was established by famous Chinese mechanic scholar Prof. Chen Zhida and Prof. Yuan Wenbo. Engineering Mechanics is a national key discipline. There are a State Key Laboratory of Coal Resources and Safe Mining and an Engineering Mechanics Experiment Center, which provide favorable scientific research environment and advanced experimental facilities. It makes this department becomes a platform of concise mechanic disciplines, a base of innovation research for engineering mechanic, and gradually form a cradle for cultivating talented mining engineer.
This department gradually forms a feature of mining subject, and has an outstanding academic team with balanced age scale and excellent scientific research infrastructure. It has nineteen full-time academic staff including five professors, eight associate professors. There is an academician of Chinese Academy of Engineering, two winners of the National Outstanding Youth Science Foundation, one teacher entitled as National Outstanding Young and Middle-aged Expert among them, and one special appointed professor by the name of "Cheung Kong Scholar Program" in this university. This department focus on the basic theories and methods of engineering mechanics, analyzing and solving engineering mechanics problems by using modern computing technology and testing technology. The courses include Analytical Mechanics, material mechanics, elastic mechanics, fluid mechanics, Experimental Mechanics, plastic mechanics, computational mechanics, structural mechanics, Introduction to Fracture and Damage Mechanics, and programming methods. Advanced Dynamic Mechanics, Engineering and Structural Tests Technology, Engineering Fluid Mechanics.

Department of Civil Engineering

Department of Civil Engineering concern on construction of industry development, industry management, construction and large project management, construction technology of large complex structures, the real estate market issues, real estate development and management. On the scientific research aspect, it hosts a number of academic institutes and laboratories including a civil Engineering Experiment Center, a Geotechnical Engineering research center established in 1991 and a State Key Laboratory for Geomechanics and Deep Underground Engineering built in 2008. The research expertise is Geotechnical Engineering. Geotechnical Engineering is a national kay discipline and also a provincial key discipline. Based on this state key laboratory, researchers have undertaken projects from the National Basic Research Program of China, the National Natural Science Foundation of China, Key Grant of Chinese Ministry of Education, the National Science and Technology Support Project, and many other state-level funding sources. A large number of key technical problems of national, provincial and urban construction projects have been tackled, which brings a great significant social and economic benefits.
This department has fourteen academic members including five professors, four associate professors. Over the years, the Department of Civil Engineering has achieved remarkable products in scientific research, educational reformation and student teaching. Over the past two years, they have successfully organized our college students to participate in the construction of competition in Beijing, the students were awarded the first, second, and third awards respectively, teachers receive excellent guidance award. The courses in this department include Structural Strengthening, Plate and Shell Mechanics, Mechanical Properties of Materials, Introduction to Road and Bridge Engineering, Foundation Treatment, Basic Principle of Steel Structures, Curriculum Design for Steel Structures, Basic Principle of Reinforced Concrete Structures, Structure of High-Rise Buildings, Curriculum Design for Concrete Structures, Structural Design of High-Rise Buildings, Foundation Engineering, Construction Law, Construction Materials, Tendering and Bidding of Construction Engineering, Architectural Construction, Introduction to Building Structure, Architectural Mechanics, Building Construction, Construction and Management of Building.

Department of Architecture

The courses in department of architecture is to gain understanding of the basic theory, method and architecture design, and obtain the architect of basic training, and gradually have an ability of design. The main research direction of architecture is the comparison of Chinese and Western architectural culture, architectural form, architectural design methodology, living environment, historical architecture and environmental protection.
It has fifteen full-time academic staff including two professors, six associate professors. The courses provide as following: Architectural Construction, Architectural Structure, Introduction to Building Structure, Construction Economy, Architectural Mechanics, Architectural Model, The Basics of Architectural Design, Principles and Methods of Architectural Design, Fine Art Practice (Color), Fine Art Practice (Sketch), Construction History of Foreign Cities, History of World Architecture, Construction History of Chinese Cities, History of Chinese Architecture, History of Chinese Garden, History of Chinese and Foreign Art, Principle and Design of Residential Building.

Department of Urban Underground Space Engineering

Department of Urban Underground Space engineering is established in 2016, as the rapid development of metro construction and the utility tunnel. The courses are based on the basic theory of mathematics, mechanics and geotechnical engineering to gain understanding of professional knowledge and skills for urban underground space project planning, survey, design, construction, operation and management and other aspects. The aim is to apply the knowledge on development, management and the protection, construction, operation and maintenance of underground structure, Students can have a solid theoretical knowledge of the profession, and have professional technology relatively broad, industry wide adaptability, the land resources, urban construction, municipal, transportation, railways and other departments engaged with the city underground space engineering planning, design, construction, management, investment and financing, scientific research and teaching other aspects of the work.
This department has nine academic members including three professors, one associate professors. Although this department was established in last year, the researchers in this department have broad experience in subway tunnel construction. The course are including: Mechanical Properties of Materials, Urban Underground Engineering, Urban Underground Architectures and Planning, Urban Planning, Design Studio: Urban Planning, Principles of Urban Planning, Large Public Architecture Design, Metro and Light Rail Engineering, Curriculum Design for Metro and Light Rail Engineering, Residential Planning, Design principles of urban underground pipe network engineering, Design and construction of subsurface excavation method, and Design and construction of shield tunneling.

Department of Geo-technique Engineering

The Department of Geo-technique Engineering was established in 1956, which is the first undergraduate major in civil engineering at CUMT. Blasting engineering research center was established since 1980's. which has developed four distinctive research areas: blasting theory and technology, underground engineering disaster prevention and mitigation, Blasting effect and protection, and Blasting optical mechanics. Under the collective efforts of all faculty members, the department has expanded rapidly in developing a great number of innovative theoretical and application results solved many engineering practice problems, such as Mine engineering, Traffic engineering, Military engineering and Construction engineering. Mine shaft engineering and blasting Engineering are placed in domestic to lead level. It has a great academic impact in related fields, and brings remarkable economic and social benefits.
There are sixteen full-time staff members in total including five full professors and seven associate professors. This department majorly offers the courses related to the basic theory and professional knowledge of mine construction, such as Geotechnical Blasting Engineering, Mine Engineering Mechanics, Mine Construction Engineering and Safety Construction Technology, Measurement Technique Practice for Mining Mechanics, Foundation Pit Engineering, Special construction methods of underground project, Curriculum Design for Special Construction Methods of Underground Project, Disaster Prevention for Underground Engineering, Wind and Hydropower Project for Underground Building, Design of Underground Structures, Curriculum Design for Underground Architecture, Structure of Well-Construction Engineering and Planning, Introduction to Underground Structure and Deep Rock Mechanics and Engineering.
